What preparation can and cannot do

Last reviewed August 2026

Two things are true at the same time.

Preparation, mindset, and surroundings are associated with how a psychedelic experience tends to go. Early evidence suggests that feeling ready, and being somewhere you trust, are linked to experiences people find more manageable.

And: none of that guarantees anything. A careful setup can still lead to a difficult time, and difficult experiences can occasionally have lasting effects for some people. Preparation lowers some risks. It does not remove them.

So it is worth preparing — and worth holding any promise of a good outcome loosely. Anyone who tells you a particular ritual, mindset, or product guarantees safety is overstating what is known.
